Lesson Plans

In our own words. There is value in witnessing the history of our culture and teaching from our lesson plans.
Metis Nation British Columbia

The “Flower Beadwork People” is one of the resources that the Grade 4 Métis Cross Curricular Unit includes in lessons plans created by the MNBC. The unit provides teachers and students with information and instruction on the Métis people and their culture. The objective of the Unit is to answer the question “Who Are the Métis?”, and to introduce the distinct characteristics of the culture, including food, clothing, language, technology, music and dance, traditional values, family and community. The Grade 4 Métis Cross Curricular Unit stresses the blending of the Aboriginal and European cultures to create the unique Métis culture. The lessons examine and study the adaptations the Métis have made throughout history to ensure the survival of Métis people. Each of the eight lesson plans is designed to explain a specific element of Métis culture and illustrates how and why the Métis are a distinct Aboriginal people.

MNBC has created a reknowned package of 8 lessons featured on many other sites and resources and offers the local perspective on Metis Politics, Culture and History missing from many national sites.

2010 The Year of the Metis

On December 10, 2009, with unanimous support from all parties, the House of Commons passed a motion calling on the Government of Canada to celebrate the invaluable contributions of the Métis Nation. As a result, the  Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario ETFO proudly created support for teachers in Ontario with resources and materials to enrich their teaching practice. The following PDF includes lesson plans that speak to proud powerful Metis people over the last 125 years and thier contributions including a piece on Heros versus Villians in history.

An engaging piece that moves beyond the defitnions and cultural component of the Metis Culture. Although many of the statistics of the Metis population are focused on the Province of Ontario there are many valuable contibutions of this resource to be taught in British Columbia classrooms.

Canadian Aboriginal Resources

In any attempt to amass information to help teachers find resources for Metis and First Nations teaching there is a collaboration organized on the Canadian Aboriginal Resources website in a Wiki site. Beginning in 1998 teachers throughout the country have contributed to this site which includes art, dance, music, langauge and lesson plans.

While at first glance the website appears to be unpolished and amateur the resources are extremly well done and are varied. There is an indepth look into various aspects of culture that other resources only briefly touch upon.

Aboriginal Themed Lesson Plans

The Indian and Metis Curriculum Advisory Committee seeks to provide guidance for those educators who recognize the value of integrating Indian and Metis content and perspective in the classroom. The following site contains 82 lesson plans featuring Metis and First Peoples content ranging from K-12. This work is the product of continuing efforts of the Indian and Metis Curriculum Advisory Committee of the Regina Public School Division #4.

This website offers an excellent data base for teachings created by Indigenous People and Educators. Teachers may use the lessons and any of the activities in the given format or adapt them to suit their needs.  The lessons and activities are organized under 6 themes: Diversity; Treaties; Governance; the Metis; Role Models; and Contributions to Society.
