Important tools in the classroom that convey the history, culture and politics of the Metis Nation are Books written by Metis Authors whose ancestors lived through the experince and the authors themselves live their culture everyday.
The Métis Commission for Children and Families of B.C. has compiled the following selection of books about Métis people, their culture and their history along with titles written by Métis authors. It is organized based on three school age groups; Primary, Middle and Secondary levels.

Owner of Stong Nations Terri Mack, Kay Kwee Kway Kwa, is a member of the Da'naxda'xw Awaetlala Nation. Terri has worked within Aboriginal Education for 20 years, 17 within the public system of Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District and most recently on reserve with Stz'uminus First Nation as the Community Literacy Coordinator for the past 3 years. During her career within education, 16 of those years have been dearly dedicated to literacy initiatives around the province of B.C., having worked in partnership with SFU, VIU, and many school districts.

Pemican Publishing
Pemmican Publications is a book publisher with a mandate to promote Metis authors, illustrators and stories. It is a not-for-profit company that operates as an arm’s-length affiliate of the Manitoba Metis Federation. Pemmican publishes on average five to six new titles per year, with titles ranging from cultural studies and autobiographies to illustrated titles for children. In all, they have published close to 150 books.

Below are links to three extremely comprehensive catalogues that hold over 200 Metis authored titles. Many of the titles are displayed in more than one catalogue as they are popular works that have recieved numerous awards and their authors are quite prolific. Yet each catalogue also has titles displayed only once, but have knowledge that is equally important to share in your classrooms from K-12.
